Yes but no one on site is credentialed to make a pronouncement of death. This requires an MD. 'Slumped over' and even not having a pulse are not certain indications of death. The driver may have suffered a cardiac event. Consciousness is something that we observe meaning that while the driver my not have been 'conscious', per se, he may very well still be there though his body likely took on a very aggressive protective stance in defense of itself. Provided intervention is taken in a timely manner, a couple minutes of compressions, perhaps a shock and some respirations or high flow oxygen could have potentially brought him back from the brink had he indeed progressed to that advanced stage. EMS carries vasopressors that support arterial pressure very well whether it's vasopressin or levophed. I believe there are a few others that have different methods of action.

I'm somewhat baffled by the Officer stating that they 'may' need a medic. Well no sh** Sherlock. You don't say. Are police officers no longer trained in basic and advanced life support to perform CPR? If there is no known out of facility DNR on file, the driver is full code all the way. Maximum compressions, max respirations, max medicinal support all the way to hospital. If the driver responds well, intubate, get him on full support, start pumping profil and suspend him in a coma. Cool him way down to below normal body temperature allowing the metabolic activity in the body to slow, take a break and begin the slow process of healing and mending if it can be achieved.

Unfortunately, people driving at speeds in excess of 100mph who wrap their cars around trees and poles more often than not tend not to have good outcomes. The body can only withstand so much. We, and our bodies, are more fragile than we think or know. There truly is very little between us being alive and us being deceased. It does not take a whole lot.

The guy shot himself in the head before he hit the pole. He was dead right there. It is amazing how much less baffled you are if you know what happened, Sherlock.
