Wow. I sincerely hope everybody is okay, and will continue to be okay. I can't even BEGIN to tell you how freaking spooky it was to see this post, because exactly thirty years ago, today, my older sister was killed in a single-vehicle accident along almost this same stretch of road, travelling from Caton towards the mall (opposite the direction which this vehicle seems to have been travelling in), just up beyond the other side of the crest, a little ways above the rise shown in the far distance of the photo above, while on the downslope back down into Big Flats. And, just like this vehicle, her vehicle ended up down across the oncoming lane, off the road & into the trees on the left. She was 24. My mother & I were just sitting down to eat when I saw the alert.
This is the location of the accident site, in my sister's case. 307 is at the bottom of this downslope on the left. The crosses attached to the tree on the right were made by my cousins, my brother & myself the day following the accident, using scrap wood from my grandfather's chicken coop, 2hich we carved & then nailed & screwed together, before painting them, too, to mark the spot. It doesn't look like this anymore, though (this was taken by a Google road team back in 2009)- they cut that tree down. And within a few years after, I lost both cousins in different accidents- the two who helped my brother & I w/ the impromptu memorial that day- scrap wood from out in the barn, which withstood so many years of weather wear & tear affixed to that tree.
R.I.P. Shannon. R.I.P. Jarrod. R.I.P John Michael. My mother & I will be saying passionate prayers for all those involved, along w/ their families & loved ones all night, tonight, and on through tomorrow & beyond. Drive Safe, Folks. There Are No Do-Overs On Oil & Gravel @ 60 Per.
